Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii

Fair Harbor’s founding mission is to protect the places we love, and that extends well beyond Fire Island. When we recently headed to Oahu's North Shore to shoot our new Spring 2023 Collection, we were inspired by the island's incredible natural beauty and the work of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, an environmental non-profit that helps keep its beaches pristine.

Aligned with Fair Harbor's core mission to preserve these special places, SCH is a grassroots organization dedicated to caring for coastlines. For 13 years, they have been engaging the community through large-scale community beach clean-ups and restoration events, like planting area-friendly vegetation along the beach to help prevent further erosion. They also coordinate educational programs, offer waste diversion services, create public awareness campaigns, and help other organizations host their own beach cleanups.

To celebrate the launch of our upcoming Hawaii campaign and support the work of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, we are partnering with the non-profit by donating $1 for every order on the weekend of January 27-29. Proceeds from this partnership will go towards SCH's upcoming Earth Day Festival Clean-up, taking place on April 22 at Waimānalo Beach Park.

Clean-ups like this are a vital part of protecting Hawaii's ecosystem. An estimated 8-10 tons of plastics enter the ocean each year, and much of it comes to rest in the iconic beaches of Oahu's North Shore. In fact, it happens to be one of the "high-risk" zones cited in a 2018 study conducted by the University of Hawaii. Researchers found that 34 percent of the state's shoreline is in danger primarily due to the sea level rise caused by climate change.

We're excited to support this hardworking organization to help finance clean-ups from the beaches because every effort adds up. In their 240 clean-ups with more than 40,000 volunteers, SCH has removed over 600,000 pounds of debris from Hawaiʻi's coastlines. Since 2014, in addition to hosting our own regular clean-ups, Fair Harbor has transformed more than 30 million plastic bottles into feel-good apparel.
